Munkagårdsgymnasiet is located in Halland, on the Swedish west coast. The school was founded in 1984 and is run by Region Halland.
Munkagårdsgymnasiet is an upper secondary school and most students are between 16 and 19 years old. The school currently has about 300 students. They study the Natural Resource Use Programme and can choose between the orientations Animals, Agriculture, Forestry and Landscaping/Horticulture. All four orientations include at least 15 weeks of learning in real workplaces outside the school, in addition to the practical work at the school. We also offer education adapted for students with neuropsychiatric diagnoses as well as adult education within the green industry. The school also offers accommodation Monday-Friday for students who have a long journey to the school.
At Munkagårdsgymnasiet's animal orientation, students get to learn about pets, zoo animals and farm animals. The school has more than 150 different animal species and it is the students who take care of the animals together with our operating staff. The students at the animal orientation can choose to immerse themselves in the fields of Dogs, Animal Healthcare or Zoo and Pet Shop. In the dog courses, students learn, among other things, about the dog's behaviour and mentality, how to handle and care for dogs, as well as different training methods and problem solving. They can bring their own dog and the school has both a dog stable and a heated training hall. Students who choose Animal Healthcare will learn everything they need to know in order to work as an animal care worker, e.g. knowledge about various treatment methods, pharmacology and veterinary equipment. In the specialization Zoo and Pet Shop, students are taught, among other things, how to attend to, activate and create environments for animals in zoos and pet shops. Depending on the courses they choose, students may gain competence as animal care worker, animal keeper, dog day-care manager and/or dog instructor, as well as eligibility for continued education.
At the agriculture orientation, students gain knowledge of machines, animals and crops. We also focus on economy and how to get profitability in an agriculture company. At Munkagård, students are given good opportunities to try the many aspects of agriculture when they, in a team, manage the school's farm for one year. We use modern technology in machinery and crop production and also in our stables with cows and pigs. Munkagårdsgymnasiet has approximately 200 hectares of arable land. We grow grain, oil plants, legumes and grasslands. During the education, we work closely with agriculture companies and others in the industry through, for example, study visits. After completing the education, the students can work with most things in modern agriculture, run their own business or continue studying to become, for example, an agricultural technologist.
Munkagårdsgymnasiet offers a solid education in modern forestry in terms of forest management, technology, economics and the environment. In addition to the school grounds, the education also largely takes place in the surrounding forests. The school has modern machinery and strives to have the latest technology. We are proud to be able to offer one of the few environmental and quality certified (PEFC) educations. During their training, students are given the opportunity to obtain the knowledge certificates required for employment in the forest industry. We conduct the practical training in close cooperation with the forest companies and their entrepreneurs. This way, we can offer many hours in the forest machines, in "real" working conditions. The education makes competent forest farmers of the students, but also prepares them for further studies to become, for example, foresters.
At Munkagårdsgymnasiet, students are offered a broad education in landscaping and horticulture where they learn everything from driving machines to paving, building fences, constructing ponds and planning and managing garden environments. The school has a lot of modern garden machines used in the training. The students at the landscaping and horticulture orientation take care of the school's outdoor environment and crops, such as fruit and vegetable cultivation outdoors and in greenhouses. The training also includes working with natural stone, construction technology and garden creation. After completing the education, the students are employed as, for example, landscape gardeners, park workers or cemetery workers. Possible continued education is, for example, arborist, garden engineer and landscape engineer. Munkagårdsgymnasiet's park is rich in species and freely accessible to visitors year-round. The park is an appreciated walking area for the local residents. At the school there is also a gene bank where Munkagårdsgymnasiet is responsible for preserving the fruit varieties of western Sweden.
Munkagårdsgymnasiet has a long history of international collaborations and we have been involved in EUROPEA for a long time. The school's international work is led by the Global Council, which meets regularly to plan and coordinate. An international perspective is an essential part of the education at Munkagårdsgymnasiet. The future will place even higher demands on the life choices of future generations. In order to make these choices, increased awareness and knowledge of sustainable development is required. By human encounters with other cultures, an increased understanding of existential issues and a more humble approach to our different living conditions is created. Our actions reflect our values and in interaction with others, these values can be developed, and insights created. We have one planet and a collective responsibility. In line with this, Munkagårdsgymnasiet aims to give as many students as possible the opportunity to participate in some form of international exchange or international internship. The experiences that students gain during their stay abroad are presented to staff and other students after returning home.
In 2019, Munkagårdsgymnasiet became the first Natural Resource Use school in Sweden to become a certified UN School. This means that together with 39 other schools in Sweden, we are part of a long-term collaboration with the Swedish UN Association, which aims to strengthen the schools' global profile and deepen the commitment and competence of students and staff.
